The following post was written by Richard who's normal blog is in French and can be found here.
Just had my Dad on the phone talking about the Tour de France which they went to support this year, as they have done every year ever since I was a kid. They’re outraged how, the supposed so called “supporters” from all around the world (Germany , England, Australia, Spain etc) came to watch the tour at one of the most beautiful places in France, and not satisfied with behaving as complete utter hooligans (running around showing their bottoms) & screaming at the tour riders, but also left behind appalling amounts of rubbish.
People from developed countries should know better. Everyone talks about climate change & the importance of conserving the environment yet seem to think that their own behaviour is exempt.
I feel so disappointed, when I talk to schools and people from the countries I’m visiting, about the importance of caring and maintaining the planet we live on, yet thanks to the worldwide media coverage of the Tour de France these days, it’s clear that the west doesn’t care enough to give an example of what it’s preaching.
I’ve always loved the Tour de France passionately and whilst I’d hate such a thing to happen, I’m seriously wondering whether it should now be hosted in some sort of enclosed stadium so that the rubbish heap left behind these days doesn’t end up spread all over the beautiful mountain countryside of France.
Do these people come to show their love and support of cycling or just to get their brief moment of glory on television in the most horrendous manner possible?
